Nitrile (Buna - N) Rubber Gasket
Nitrile rubber or Buna - N and NBR is a popular elastomeric gasket material. It is very acid and alkali resistant, gasoline, hydraulic fluid, and petroleum product resistant. Its commonly used in automobile, aerospace, and industrial applications Nitrile rubber is also resistant to service temperatures from -40°F to +212°F and thus applicable for various service conditions.
EPDM Rubber Gasket
EPDM rubber is propylene-ethylene copolymer. It is most acid, alkali, aging, heat, oxidant, ozone, sunlight, steam, and water resistant to attack. Due to its longevity, it's used preferably on the outside side. EPDM gaskets are highly resistant to - 40°F to 250°F (intermittent to +275°F). In the water, steam, and other environments in the building, automotive, and plumbing trade, EPDM rubber gaskets are used widely.
Silicone Rubber Gasket
Silicone rubber is a high-performance elastomers with excellent high- and low-temperature resistance, operating between -75°F and +500°F.In addition to it, it offers superior weather resistance, ozone resistance, UV resistance, water resistance, and oxidation resistance. Neoprene is highly flexible and can be utilized in most severe environments. Neoprene resists good acid and alkali, oil and grease, sun and ozone, twisting, flexing, and weathering,with a temperature range from -40°F to +230°F (intermittently up to +250°F).Commonly used in refrigerator seals, factory gaskets, and wetsuits due to their water-sealing properties.
Other Types of Rubber Gaskets
SBR Gasket: It possesses low cold temperature flexibility, heat resistance, tensile strength, impact strength. It is -67°F to +180°F resistant and finds applications in wastewater treatment and general industrial sealing.
Butyl Rubber Gasket: It is more gas impermeable, i.e., for drug closures and inner tubes of tires. It also possesses good water, weather, and chemical resistance.
Natural Rubber Gasket: Natural rubber has general resilience resistance and elasticity. It is generally applied where good flexibility is needed, e.g., in some mechanical uses of vibration dampening. It offers relatively weak resistance to chemicals, oil, and heat compared to some of the synthetic rubbers.
Things to Remember When Selecting Rubber Gasket Materials
Temperature:Ensure the rubber material can handle the operating temperature range. Exceeding such ranges will soften the rubber, cause it to lose elasticity, or melt.
Chemical Compatibility: Consider the chemicals to which the gasket will be subjected. For example, if there is exposure to gasoline in the application, nitrile rubber is better than natural rubber.
Mechanical Stress: If the gasket is subjected to pressure, vibration, or cyclic flexing, the material should be of high tensile strength and with good wear and tear resistance.
